How to make your Perfume/Scent last longer

Writer's picture: Meri BelleMeri Belle

These tips have saved me from the shackles of feeling like I have to always buy or have expensive perfumes. Granted of course that expensive perfumes usually last much much longer due to the nature of their ingredients (which is awesome!) but not all of us can afford expensive scents so this is how I make my perfume last longer no matter what brand it is:

1. Apply Perfume on at least three points on your body

Make sure to apply your perfume on at least three of the following parts: points where there are joints (i.e wrists, elbow, neck, back of the knee), behind the ears and for ladies between or under your boobies:). This ensures that your perfume is covering a larger surface area and you are more likely to smell lovely for a longer period of time.

2. Apply an oil as a base

Before spraying or applying your perfume, rub an odorless oil(e.g coconut oil) or Vaseline on the points you wish to apply your perfume, this will make it last longer. It doesn't have to be a lot by the way. The most common reason why most inexpensive perfumes do not last long is because they have a much less oil content. Applying your perfume on an oily surface will make the scent stay on for longer.

3. Spray your clothes just before ironing them

If you iron your clothes metimes it is good to spray your clothes with a bit of perfume and let it set for a few minutes before ironing. On this one you'd have to first make sure that your perfume does not leave a stain or smudge on clothes before spraying it on. It is best to do a small patch test on cloth and if it stains then leave this one out.

4. Spray some sheets of Toilet Paper

Ok hear me out on this one! After folding your clothes and putting them away in the cupboards take a few sheets of toilet paper, spray them with your perfume and place the sheets randomly in between the piled up clothes. This will have your clothes holding on to the scent of your perfume for much longer. Just make sure you're not spraying too much otherwise it will just feel like you're wasting your dear perfume. 5. Allow perfume to set before going out

If your spray your perfume and directly leave the house directly after, chances are it will jsut vaporize very quickly and by the time the day ends you'd have forgotten that you applied some perfume before leaving the house. You would rather spray or apply your perfume at least 15-20 minutes before going outside. This will allow it to settle and absorb well before being exposed to the wind and any outside factors and it will definitely stay on longer. Some perfume Don‘ts: Ok so now that we have covered some important tips of what you should do, let's now quickly cover what you shouldn't do and avoid sabottaging your goal of smelling nice.

1. Do Not rub your wrists together after spraying them with perfume as the friction and heat you create doing this only distorts the scent (especially with the cheaper perfumes) and honey we don't want that!

2. Do Not spray your perfume with the bottle too close to your body, you will only concentrate the perfume on one point. Instead spray with the bottle at least 30 cm away from your body so it can be distributed better over a larger surface area. Depending on the nozzle of the spray bottle, spraying too close to your skin might actually hurt and/or bruise your skin so be careful.

3. Do Not apply a body lotion with a strong scent unless it is the same scent as your perfume. If the scents are different this will only produce a confusing smell which in most cases won’t be very nice. You’re better off applying a very lightly scented or odorless lotion or what's even better is if the lotion is the same brand and line as your perfume. This will just make your scent stronger and gives it a better chance of staying on for longer.

Extra tips:

Get to know your perfume or scent better. You need to be able to know how much perfume is just right for you, you definitely DO NOT want to walk around choking everyone with your perfume, it is off-putting.

It is also nice to find a signature scent or at least use that one perfume you like for a longer period of time. With time the scent will cling onto your clothes even after washing them. Besides who doesn't want people to ackknowledge your presence just by the way you smell?

Were these tips helpful? Let me know which one you will or have tried and works for you. Feel free to add some tips of your own :)
